Emptiness...

Been a long while... Loads of things happened over this period... My final exams came and went, leaving an era of sorrow, hollowed self-esteem and scribbled answer-sheets... After 15 days of continuous torture, one can now let their hair down... And while my hair are anything but down right now, life's gotten pretty amusing...
First of all, the hostel has the stillness of a graveyard... Only four guys are staying in this 160-room building.. So when I get up in the early hours of dawn, I get cold feet going to the loo, for there's a dark corridor outside and not a living soul on the whole 2nd floor. As long as we are busy with stuff in the room, everything works out just fine. But when you suddenly get the urge to get out of your room, a stony silence and cold western air currents flirt with your soul... To top it all, our chief warden says that all those staying over for the holidays need to submit a written application stating that they wont be any cause of trouble and they wont damage any property during their stay... As if there's any piece of furniture in our rooms that hasnt crumbled already!!... Anyways, we are really not stupid enough to cause trouble when there are only 4 suspects... So we stay indoors most of the day, snoozing or hogging.. Every once in a while, a night is spent out... With sand and water for dessert, along with a few more loners and a good supply of "stuff"...
Being alone allows a lot of introspection, and that usually leads to even more confusion.. For instance, we are the low-scoring populace... On other hand, I try to justify this by assuming that marks dont affect one's career as long as they know and understand that stuff... Then again, isnt there more to life than just getting a good job with a healthy salary and a beautiful woman?
Sitting by the edge of the ocean, I often wonder what life means in itself... Someone once taught me that our purpose in the bigger scheme of things is to try to make a difference to the lives of others... Of those less fortunate... In Rang de Basanti, there's a line which says that you plant one tree and get hundreds more in return... Same is with our life... You help one person to take charge of their life, and the said person will follow it up when their time comes, resulting in a chain-reaction of mutual betterment... We are blessed with the gift of reason, curiosity and innovation.. The only logic as I see fit is that we have a much bigger purpose than the customary eat, sleep and die cycle followed by animals...
While on the subject of animals, how far is it justified to save animals from becoming extinct? Evolution has always resulted in extinction every now and then. Although there's no harm in saving our fellow inhabitants, wouldnt it make more sense if we tried saving our own species before heading to others? What I m saying is, humans have a much higher death rate as compared to any other animal. Starvation, war, disease and communal disharmony claim many lives. Isnt it more important to save the lives of people dying of hunger in Phillipines, or from war in Iraq & Afghanistan, or from disease in Sudan, or from riots in India & Pakistan?
We take pride in being the most intelligent being on Earth. Yet, we forget the simple thing that a human life is much more important than an animal one. I may be wrong over here. I just think that it wouldnt mean much of an achievement if we neglect our own fellow species while saving others.
Lately, too much is changing... From our grading system, to the anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill, to the price of petrol & to the placement scenario. Change is good, as long as you change with it.

Invincible truth!!

As a young lad, once Subroto Roy Sahara was yelling at the washer-man for ruining a pair of his favourite jeans. His father, late Sudhir Chandra Roy, overheard him and came over. After listening to his son, he told his son to apologise to the washer-man... Later, his father explained to him the reason behind it. He said,"You only have a right to criticise somebody when you have the ability to do the very same work better than them. Only then can you question their shortcomings! And since you are no good when it comes to washing your laundry, you had no right to yell at the washer-man that way."

godlyk Gokarna..

Its time to leave for Gokarna, bags packed and all... We reach the railway station and scoot about here and there, wondering where our train is halting and why isnt the announcement being made??!! Upon enquiry, it turns out that that particular train isnt gonna show up and that we have been fooled, once more, by the Indian Railways. Heads down, red-faced, we finally decide on going by bus, a full 5-hours journey through the foothills of Goa and Kanataka. Luckily, we all got seats at the back..
